Kulu is pleased to present these unique items of jewelry to our customers. We have re-purposed offcuts from hides and leathers used to make our handbags and other accessories into these distinctive pieces. Each piece is truly one of a kind and due to the fact there are no two alike, ordering choices are limited and although you can choose which leather or hide you want, you cannot choose your color preference.
All of our jewelry items are inlaid with genuine ostrich quill leather, ostrich shin leather and nguni hide, and are available in blacks, browns and naturals. The metal used is plated zinc, coated with a clear lacquer for additional protection. All of the thongs are genuine suede or leather and each item is size-adjustable. All of the products are handmade in Cape Town, South Africa.
Ostrich quill leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialized and expensive production process making its aesthetic value costly.
Ostrich shin leather is the leg leather of the ostrich and characterized by its unique texture and appearance that looks like lizard or snake.
The Nguni cattle breed is special to southern Africa and has always played an important social and economic role in the development of tribal societies and these cattle are used as a bride’s dowry. The number of animals held by a village or individual determined much of their importance to the rest of the world and this holds true in many tribes even today.
